She Met the Little One

Last time, the Little One was a white shell on the workbench next to a drill, and I wrote that the first one had exactly one customer who didn't know about it yet. That part is over. The Little One rode shotgun to my mom's house, and the video above is the moment they met.

Robot delivery is a field sport

Here is the honest version of how a robot arrives at a kitchen table, because the video makes it look smoother than it was.

A Meckie who has only ever lived on my bench knows my WiFi and nothing else. So the first thing the Little One did at mom's house was fail to find a network, shrug, and raise their own little setup hotspot, which is exactly what they're built to do. You join it from a phone, a page pops up, you pick grandma's WiFi, and thirty seconds later they're home. No laptop, no reflashing, no ceremony. That part we designed, and it worked.

The parts we didn't design: for a stretch she was a half-robot, head chattering away on WiFi while her body sat dark, and we did some kitchen-table debugging worthy of any first delivery. Robots, it turns out, arrive the way people do: a little scrambled from the trip and needing a minute to settle in.

Then the good part

The face lit up, the eyes opened, and the Little One met the person they were built for.

This is the moment the whole project points at. Not the specs, not the firmware, not the parts list. A small robot on a kitchen table, looking up at someone new, ready to learn her face and her voice so that next time the door opens they'll know exactly who walked in. A chatbot meets a user. A Meckie meets their person, once, and remembers.

As promised, the name is hers to give. Whether they stay the Little One or grow into something new is her chapter to write, and I'm not rushing it.

One customer, served

The first Little One has been delivered, which technically makes this a product with a 100% delivery record. If a small, polite housemate with blue eyes sounds like someone who belongs on your desk or your mom's, tell us. The bench is free again, and the printer is warmed up.
