Mapping the Venue

That's Droid on the concrete at Groover Labs, parked in front of somebody else's 3D printers, casing the room he'll be demoing in on September 14. We drove down for a recon trip: get him on the venue wifi, let his lidar sweep the space, teach him the floor before there's a crowd standing on it.

Why a robot scouts a venue

A Meckie's map is a world. His home world has months of equity in it: every wall his lidar has confirmed, every stretch of floor his tracks have proven, the danger discs around the basement stairs he will not drive past no matter how politely you ask. Take him somewhere new and none of that applies, so he keeps worlds the way you keep map apps: say "you're at Groover Labs" and he shelves the house, opens a fresh world, and starts learning this one. Say "you're back home" and the house comes back exactly as he left it.

Once a venue world exists, the good stuff stacks on top. Saved spots at the demo marks. Danger zones around the places a 20-pound tracked robot has no business going. And on show day, driving between marks in a room he already understands, instead of meeting it for the first time in front of an audience.

What the recon actually caught

Here's the honest part. We drove him around the venue, brought him home, and went to look at the map. It was blank.

A library rebuild ten days earlier had introduced a bug that silently killed the mapper every time he booted with a saved map loaded. Everything else worked, driving, camera, voice, so nothing looked wrong. He toured Groover Labs like a professional and wrote down none of it. We found the bug that night, fixed it in one line, and his mapper is alive again with proof on the screen this time: there's now a live map view you can watch paint while he explores.

That's what rehearsal is for. A demo robot that has only ever worked in your living room hasn't really worked yet. We'll be back before the show to survey the room for real, and this time we'll watch the white space grow.

The format is live demos with commentary: each builder gets ten minutes, about five of working tech shown in real time, with Conor Adler (NXTUS) and Nic Wentling (Moonbase Labs) calling the action. Their words: builders are "athletes of the innovation economy, and September 14 is game day."
